The kitchen at the Briercrest Community Centre was put to good use on Sunday.
Volunteers were able to whip up a brunch of pancakes, ham, sausages and fruit without fear of tripping on cracks in an old linoleum floor.
The brunch was part of a celebration to honour Conexus Credit Union for a donation of $12,500 towards improvements at the centre.
New flooring for the kitchen and drop-in area was among the improvements made with the money.
"In these days of out-migration from the country to the larger urban centres . . . it is heartening to see people such as the Conexus Credit Union continuing to invest in the future of our way of life, in which we all so passionately believe," said organizer Gloria Scott in a speech.
In total, $25,000 was raised by the Briercrest Community Centre Board for improvements. Half of the funds came from the Conexus donation, while the remaining money was raised through a series of community events.
One of the events was a western night, which brought in over $6,000 and featured local singers and comedy skits - all with a western theme.
Scott, who organized the fundraising event, said that maintaining facilities in the community of 122 will help keep younger families in the town.
