I can't put my bin directly across the alley from my yard because there is a double garage there, I have to wheel it down and put it across from my neighbors thus he has to wheel his down even further. A city worker told me this, in fact he put the bins there himself.
Of all the ideas this city has had this has to be the 2nd dumbest, the first being years ago when the bylaw stated that we must walk on the right hand side of the sidewalk, that even made it to the panel show Front Page Challenge

discovermoosejaw.com in their article on this story, claim pamphlets were sent out explaining to people where to place these bins. I have yet to see any such pamphlet in my mail box! Might explain why people aren`t placing the bins where they are suppose to!

We have had them for 3 years they work great. The birds and animals stay out.It will take a bit for the operator to get the fell but it will work.

I am not impressed with the new garbage system with the real lane pick up. I do not want to leave my garbage can in the back lane for fear of it being stolen and then I am responsible for replacing it, and I am not capable of wheeling a full garbage can out to the back lane and down a two foot slope every week, especially in the winter. I think that if the city chose this automated system it should all be front pick up only.

    Three things I noticed yesterday

    1) After we noticed the garbage picked up by 7:30 a.m. a truck came along again at 8 a.m. and picked up empty trash containers
    2) These trucks are supposed to prevent the Workers Comp injuries and save the city money in the long run. Well... when that thing picks up the bin and dumps out the trash, the cab the driver is sitting in sure jostles around a fair bit, can't see that being good in the long run.
    3) The trucks are amazingly quick, I doubted the quick times I heard earlier, until I saw it in action, very fast.

Well I see that picture says it all - I noticed many of the bins on our block were still half full - now I see why - like was noted by others here - is the bin going to be half emptied! What about when it's cold - shall it crack? he fact is I don't know how we're going to place bins on the back lane in winter - too much snow to maneuver them!

Why can't they drive up the alley both directions?

Ours wasn't emptied this week because it was on the wrong side of the alley - well as noted others - we too did NOT get any pamphlet with instructions on where it was to be placed and what days were pick up days. Our bin is full and we live in an apartment - ONE BIN for four suites!?? Where are we to place our garbage?

I like the idea in theory but - I think the logistics of this program have not been properly arranged.

After reading the comment from Not Impressed I got an idea. I could write a book and call it Garbage Bins for Dummies. They have these books for most other things down at the library. It's pretty simple Not Impressed. Haul the EMPTY BIN to where it should be, THEN put the garbage bags in it. I'm sure you have been hauling garbage bags for many years now, just put them in the bin once it's placed. Seems pretty simple to me.

For those on the powerpole side it sure does suck at how much Yard space you must give to the city.
The bin has to be 3' from lane, the 3' bin, then 3' behind it as well you must let the person across the lane put his in your yard thus 3' beside each......
I have LOST 90 square feet of my yard.
    IT SUCKS!!!!!

the driver needs better glasses you can see by this picture he didnt pick the bin up properly and damaged it and i bet all the garbage didnt come out hence the reason why no one will pay a dime to fix or replace a drivers mistake

I recieved my bin a little over a week ago and my garbage hasnt been picked up for almost two weeks. I have alot of garbage, my other garbage containers are full and the CITY'S Bin is full and i have a few more bags loose. I am unhappy... Also I WILL not replace the CITY'S Bin if it get's damaged. In the pic above looks like the truck squishes the bin to pick it up and dump, interesting how the CITY'S bin's will look after WINTER... Cracked is my guess. Does anyone know how much The CITY'S bins will cost to replace. And what am i supposed to do with all this GARBAGE, wait for the truck to empty it and fill it again and run it down the alley? I know a few people that havent recieved there bins. Not enough to supply the City?
I have five garbage bins that i recently bought for my home(6 months) and now i cant use them. Another friend said that their garbage wasnt picked up because the bins werent exactly right, why didnt the city drop the bins off where they
wanted them to be placed? I think the City sanatation people should be a little more helpful and leave a note saying bin not in correct spot and take the !@$*
    garbage.

Was at the back this am when a city worker walked through checking bin positions before pick-up. He moved mine about another foot INTO the lane because it wasn't sitting level. What happens when I'm not home to bring it in right away and it's sitting out in the lane for 8-plus hours? Someone is going to hit it. Plus, a bag fell out onto the ground and the driver had to manually pick it up. Front lane pick-up is no better because people put the bins out, go to work and the bins won't get taken in for hours. There are lots of people coming and going for whatever reason; there sit the garbage bins in the way. As expected; this system solved some problems but created others.

its not rocket science bins on power pole side of alleys for rear pick up at least 3 feet from buildings and fences..this should have been in the herald a week ago payed for by the city can i ask why someone would chain there bin up? is the chain long enough to reach the top of the garbage truck and will it get caught on something or scratch the side of the truck???or didnt the person with the bin know when collection day was? i can understand the secure part on off days as theres a chance of theft anyways im happy with having a new bin its about time this was adopted..

This reminds me, I still have to get some spraypaint and label my bin with my address. Is that illegal?

One other thing, all the bins are coded so it would be quite a task to steal one and be able to use it in MJ, you'd get caught eventually. Why anyone would steal a garbage bin when the city provides them for you is beyond me.
