The story on the cover of Wednesday's Times-Herald about panhandling has raised some interesting issues about the activity.
As was illustrated in the story, the City of Moose Jaw is not worried about the issue as opposed to the City of Regina.
Mayor Dale McBain said there is no need to implement anything because it is not a big issue for Moose Jaw with very few local panhandlers.
The city's clerk-solicitor, Myron Gulka-Tiechko, added that he believes the activity is legal and people have a right to do that.
But comments on the story at mjtimes.sk.ca have shown a different opinion about the matter.
Most of the comments on the website about the story have been vehemently against the idea of panhandling. Some don't want to see it allowed. And some of those comments were very angry.
This is an issue that rankles many people who commented. There are many who don't like the idea of someone sitting on a street asking for money, instead of getting a job.
Others don't like having to deal with beggars. Some people don't like saying no or even talking to these people, while others fear retribution if they do not donate money.
This is clearly not just a simple issue. For now, if there is very little on the streets of Moose Jaw, it shouldn't be a big concern. But if the number of panhandlers increases, it's an issue that could come to a head and should no longer be ignored.
Some people just don't like panhandling
