The annual Terry Fox run is just three weeks away and Moose Jaw area co-ordinator Margaret Moran hopes many people will come out for the annual run.
"This is the second year I have been involved as a co-ordinator, " said Moran. "Last year's event was such a huge success. Moose Jaw raised the most money it ever had and we want to beat it this year."
Last years run raised $5,000 locally for cancer research. Provincially, a total of more than $1 million was raised during the 2008 campaign.
The run is held in remembrance of Fox's 1980 attempt to run across Canada with one leg, having lost the other to cancer.
This year's run will be held on Sept. 13 starting at the Wakamow Valley speedskating oval at 1 p.m., with registration at 12 p.m.
The organizers have set up a 10 kilometre run through the valley.
"Anyone participating can do all or part of the route," said Moran. "There are no restrictions. It's an all inclusive run - anyone can participate even if they can't run or are in a wheelchair."
The run has a few volunteers signed up to help on the day of the run, but more would be appreciated.
"We can always use volunteers to help set up before and clean up after and help people cross the roads safely," said Moran.
Moran said this year's run was a challenge as organizers had to raise enough funds for the run.
"The Terry Fox foundation have been very helpful with tips on how to raise money," said Moran. "The problem we face is that Moose Jaw is so small and there is a lot of competition for fundraising dollars."
For every dollar raised 87 cents goes to cancer research, 10 cents helps with fundraising and the remaining three cents goes to administration fees, said Moran.
The goal for the run is to make it a family event said Moran.
"The run is close to 30 years old now and we are beginning to see generations of families coming out to participate," said Moran. "This year's event will be very family-oriented."
Organizers hope to have a barbecue at the end of the run and a kids play area with face painting and entertainment.
Moran said the run is very meaningful as it continues Fox's spirit.
"It's like a pebble thrown into a pond. The ripples continue to grow, just like Terry's dreams and hopes for a cure to cancer," said Moran.
The first Terry Fox Run was held in Canada in September 1980.
Now, the run is held yearly in over 60 countries and has raised over $360 million for cancer research.
