“It was really exciting, but I don’t really understand the scope of it,” he told the Times-Herald on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old second-year University of Saskatchewan student received this rare honour as part of a four-year Canada Company scholarship, which provides $4,000 to children of military men and women killed in the line of duty. He dinged the bell with several other scholarship recipients this past weekend.

Naismith’s father, Capt. Kevin Naismith, died on May 26, 2003, when his CF-18 Hornet crashed during a military exercise at CFB Cold Lake in Northern Alberta.

One of those young people dinging the TSX bell alongside him was University of Lethbridge student Scott Senecal, the son of Sgt. Charles Senecal who died when the CT-114 Tutor he was in crashed near Moose Jaw last year.
