Users of SaskTel cellphones and other hand-held devices in the city can now surf the Internet and download files faster.
The Crown corporation announced Friday it had completed upgrades to its wireless networks serving Moose Jaw, Caron, Pense, Melville, Benson, Smiley and Stoughton.
"We made the announcement last year in September," said Andy Tate, media relations manager for SaskTel. "It's available now."
SaskTel cellular network customers - served by a 1X wireless system since 2003 - now have access to faster data speeds through EV-DO Rev A technology.
This means users can browse websites, send e-mail, download audio and video files or upload information up to 20 timesmore quickly than with the 1X system.
"EV-DO is quite a bit faster," said Tate.
"It allows more information to go to and from phones quicker."
The upgrade is part of an ongoing $11.3 million SaskTel project to expand or improve EV-DO service in 64 locations across the province.
It helps bring the corporation's total investment in digital cellular service to over $170 million, said Crown corporations minister Ken Cheveldayoff.
EV-DO Rev A is a third-generation network technology.
Peak average download speeds will range from 2000 kbps to 2300 kbps.
In order to take advantage of the new system, customers must be using EV-DO Rev A capable devices in equipped areas.
The best way to determine this, said Tate, is to check your device's owners manual or visit a SaskTel store or dealer.
"It's not available on all models," he explained.
"The newest ones that have come out in the last year or so most likely have it."
Customers roaming outside EV-DO Rev A equipped areas will automatically be transferred back to the 1X system.
