A trip to Europe wasn't on Drew Nimegeers' mind when he traveled with his local Pee Wee Tier I hockey team to Lloydminster for a tournament.
But a strong performance gained the attention of scouts in attendance looking for some young talent for an Alberta team headed to an overseas tournament.
"I was pretty surprised. I had no idea they were scouting there," said Drew, 12, in an interview with the Times-Herald before departing for Germany Saturday. "I'm not sure (why they picked me). I just had a good tournament, I guess."
Drew and his teammates from Alberta will take on similarly-aged European teams in Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic in the tournament.
"(He's) excited and nervous, but it will be a great opportunity for him," said his mother Natalie.
Drew's father will accompany him on the trip, and the experience won't just be about hockey. There will be plenty of time to play tourist, with white-water rafting, castles and tours of concentration camps on the agenda for the youngsters.
