Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on Tuesday regarding the death of former member of Parliament David Batters:

"I was saddened to hear of the tragic death of my former caucus colleague and fellow (MP) David Batters.

"Those of us who knew and worked with Dave will remember him as a friend and colleague who worked tirelessly on behalf of his constituents in Palliser.

"Dave ultimately lost his struggle with severe depression, but we should use his loss as a reminder that mental health illnesses affect Canadians in every walk of life. Too often, Canadians, such as Dave, suffer in silence out of fear of being stigmatized for their illness.

"On behalf of our Conservative Caucus, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."

I knew Dave personally, and he was a great guy, and like Prime Minister Harper mentioned in his statement, he tried to keep his disease out of the headlines, which is tough to do when you're a Member of Parliament.
I have read that 2 out of 5 Canadians will deal with mental illness in their life. So, it's very common. If anyone out there believes that they are suffering from any type of mental illness, please, please, contact your doctor, or visit Donna at the Canadian Mental Health Association.
God Bless you Dave, and my prayers go out to Denise and the family too.

I went to school with him for many years and had much of the same social circle. I spent many hours enjoying his friendship, smiles, positive outlook, and kindness to others. He was larger than life. This was shocking to hear and my sympathies go out to Denise and their families. All of his old friends will miss him.
