Looking for a romantic event to take that special someone to for Valentine’s Day?
Embraceable You: The Music of George Gershwin is coming to the Mae Wilson Theatre at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on Feb. 14.
The show features married couple and veteran musical theatre performers Dean and Lisa Balkwill singing Gershwin's biggest hits, including: They Can't Take That Away From Me and I Got Rhythm.
Dean Balkwill is a native of Saskatchewan, and hails from Regina. He was once a member of Saskatchewan Express, and his theatre credits include Rent on Broadway and The Lion King in Toronto. His wife, Lisa, sang and danced alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Best-Picture winning Chicago, and she was then Teri Hatcher's understudy in Cabaret on Broadway for several years.
The two now reside in Atlanta, Lisa's hometown, where Dean was able to tell the Times-Herald about the upcoming performance.
“I think for us, we just wanted to put on a quant little show and come back and be able to perform for family and friends,” Balkwill said. “So much music these days isn’t saying very much, they don’t write like they used to.” Balkwill said on wanting to use the music of Gershwin.
The couple will be joined by four musicians, three of which hail from saskatchewan.
“The show is similar to An American in Paris, which involves a man falling in love with a lounge singer,” Balkwill said. “We put it more into a storyline ... and it’s going to be great!”
