The City of Moose Jaw is in communications with environmental consultants, discussing how best to deal with approximately 263 cubic metres of untreated domestic sewage that now lays beneath the frozen surface of the Moose Jaw River.

The escaped effluent was the result of a technical malfunction at a local pumping station on Dec. 26.

This week, city engineer Ryan Johnson told the Times-Herald the untreated sewage is contained for the time being and the city is seeking the proper advise as how to clean up the mess.

He said an electrical short-circuit caused the Crescent View pump station breakers to trip, preventing fires. However, because there was no power outage, the station’s backup generators didn’t start up, so sewage was allowed to flow into the river until crews could attend the incident.

It really is too bad this has happened, Moose Jaw's river park is to me the most beautiful part of the City. Growing up in River Park, swimming in the river, brings back some great memories. It really is a shame that the city cannot do a better job at keeping the River clean and safe for many to enjoy again for all recreational purposes. :(
