A woman is warning people to be on the lookout after her Moose Jaw-based mother was called by someone posing as her grandson and asking for money.
Margaret Imrie, who lives in Saskatoon but stayed in Moose Jaw to be with her 87-year-old mother after the disturbing phone call, said people needed to be aware of the scam.
She said fortunately her mother, who did not wish to be named, did not fall for the phone call but she said other vulnerable seniors may end up giving out money.
Imrie said the caller used her mother’s grandson’s name and said he was in Montreal for a wedding and had been arrested for a traffic violation and he needed S5,000.
But Imrie said her mother told the caller it didn’t sound like her grandson and the man eventually hung up.
“My mother was very rattled,” said Imrie.
The family reported the incident to the RCMP, Moose Jaw Police and Phone Busters.
“I want to tell everyone I possibly can to notify every child, every teenager, every adult and every senior that this is going on and everyone should tell their grandparents and aunts and uncles not to talk to these people and to hang up the phone."
