Nearly 300 students from across Moose Jaw took part in a Wildlife Expo at Riverview Collegiate where they experienced a host of different activities.
Events included everything from a Redtail hawk display to dog obedience to snow shoeing and archery.
There was also a series of displays for students to find out more about wildlife in their own area such as the Moose Jaw Canoe and Kayak club and the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
Darrell Crabbe, of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, who helped organized the event along with Riverview Collegiate teacher Kelly Grass, said it was an opportunity to educate youngsters about wildlife.
He said students from two high schools and five elementary schools took part in the event on Thursday.
“It’s a common problem across society where youngsters do not get the chance or opportunity to see a lot of conservation initiatives or have much contact with wildlife.
“Even though Moose Jaw has really close contact to rural areas, a lot of urban kids are losing their perspective on wildlife and we take every opportunity we can to rekindle some of that connection.”
“We did this last year so this is our second annual. We had 180 students last year and this year just over 280 so I’m hoping it will happen next year.”
