It’s the end of the summer for Vanier Collegiate students who will be heading back to school on Wednesday.

Classes start earlier at Vanier, which is part of the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, than at other high schools in the city.

Elementary and high schools in the Prairie South School Division begin on Aug. 25 while the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division elementary schools begin on Aug. 30.

Geri Hall, superintendent of learning for Holy Trinity, said several years ago Vanier applied for a different school year so they balance their semesters around Christmas.

Semester one finishes before Christmas and then they start a fresh in January.

Hall said traditionally high schools finish semester one with exams in January.

It means the students break up earlier for the summer than other schools but also head back to class earlier in August.

“There are 197 days of teacher work days but it wraps up in mid June,” Hall said.

Halsey Shaheen, 17, is looking forward to starting grade 12 on Wednesday.

“I think it’s OK to be going back as you get out two weeks earlier in June so your summer starts sooner and you can get jobs sooner but sometimes it’s not as fun going back earlier."

Being a student that will be a freshman this year I can tell you I was pretty nervious going into this but I know a lot of people that attened Vanier and the assured me it's a great school and i'll have nothing to worry about. Also the vice principle and my 1st semester english teacher used to work at my elementry school in the holy trinity devision. The VP taught me grade 6 & 7 math while the english teacher was my homeroom teacher in grade 7.
