Negotiations are in progress between XL Beef and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, according to Norm Neault, president of the Local 1400.

He said the aim is to draw up a work place adjustment plan. Meetings were taking place on Wednesday.

Nearly 200 employees were told they were permanently laid off by XL Beef on Aug. 13.

They have been locked out since Sept. 2009 and picket lines will continue to stay up until the closure.

At the time of the announcement, XL Beef said the plant would be closed within 90 days. Neault told the Times-Herald he has been told the plant will close on Nov.10.

Neault said he could not give any specific details about negotiations as yet but said the union is trying to work towards getting job retraining, work placements and severance pay for employees.

“What we are doing is trying to get some type of assistance from the employer for these employees to transition to other jobs.”
