Families should have a plan in place so they know where the children are and when they are expected back home, Moose Jaw Police’s  Const. Shawn Mohle has urged.

With children returning to school after the summer vacation, he said it’s important parents remind children heading off to class how to stay safe.

“It’s always good to have a plan in place so if their son or daughter is doing extra curricular activities and has to walk home at night time, you know when they are expected back.

“They should walk in a group and let parents know their estimated arrival time,” he said.

Mohle said it is especially important to walk in a group at night time.

“It is also good to have a cell phone available so there is  some way to contact your son or daughter or some way for them to contact you,” he said.

Mohle said parents should make sure their children know the rules of the road.

“Stay on the sidewalk, use cross walks, watch out for vehicles going to work in the morning and be cautious.

“We just want kids to follow common sense rules, use side walks and pay attention to traffic.

“Also report any suspicious activity so if someone does approach and does make a group feel uncomfortable, do not hesitate to contact the police,” he said.
