The weather outside was not frightful and inside the mall not so delightful, however Moose Jaw got its snow and business tills were all glow — that was the story in the Friendly City this weekend.

With Christmas literally just around the corner Moose Jaw’s retailers are feeling the pressure of the Christmas rush, however not one said they have anything to complain about.

Saturday the Town ‘N’ Country Mall was swarming with shoppers trying to start and finish their shopping before that final hour strikes and the downtown core was no different.

Darcy Mcdonald, owner of Zeke’s Jewellers located in the mall, said he loves the hustle and bustle of the holidays and this year couldn’t be going any better.

“November we had our best sales ever and I am not really sure why. I wish I knew so I could do it again,” laughed Mcdonald.

He added, “December started out strong and we still have our biggest days ahead of us.”

Although he has attributed bad sales in the past to good weather, Mcdonald said that is no longer the case. In fact he said the good weather seems to be working for Moose Jaw and its businesses.

“I use to think the warmer weather would send people to Regina but lately I have noticed a lot of people from Regina and the surrounding areas making their way to Moose Jaw, which is great. We have a lot to offer here, so it is nice to see people taking advantage of that.”

As for this year’s big ticket items? Mcdonald said Moose Jaw can expect a lot of 2012 weddings.

He said engagement rings have been selling like mad, which is new. Mcdonald said diamonds are always a high sales item during the holidays, but engagement rings have really taken the cake this year.

“Every year is different and you never know what the hot item is going to be, you only hope you have enough of it.”
