More than 50 people were in attendance at the Ina Grafton Gage facility on Tuesday night. The community meetings – another will be held again on Thursday night – were advertised to residents of the Pleasant View community as a forum to discuss the site’s future.

The future of the site has already been decided.

What was a care home for senior citizens is being converted into a centre for a social detox program. The social detox program had been housed in the Angus Campbell Centre for several decades.

Five Hills Health Region reached an agreement with the Thunder Creek Rehabilitation Association to convert the building to have it functional for the new needs by April 1. The building was purchased for $1.2 million with approximately $2,000 - $3,000 worth of renovations left to do.

According to Five Hills there will still be 14 independent living suites on the grounds for seniors.

The detox centre will be providing 20 beds for adults recovering from addictions.

The detox centre will be non-custodial, meaning that the people receiving treatment will be there voluntarily. Withdrawal treatment lasts from about 11 - 14 days.

Community members were openly concerned about the impact this development would have on their daily life.

I need to change my previous comment...and I should not have made that comment until I heard ALL what was on the agenda. I apologize to the people living in the area of the Ina Grafton...this should never happen now that I've heard the entire story. why did they pull the funding from the Angus Campbell, they have been a success for years now, why was this move put in place?

In my oppinion the Times Herald of jan 25th did not adequately report on the meeting of Monday evening. There is definite concern on the way FHHR made the decision to startup a new detox center in their neighborhood when there was an operational one already in existance on the outskirts of the city. The Angus Campbell Center has operated successfully for over 35 years. Why move funding to a new facility in the middle of a retirement community? It is my hope that the ACC continues to operate with or without FHHR funding. If there is strong enough opposition to the new location, a petition should be started to voice the communities oppinions. I agree with SN to a point, however I need to ask.....why fix something that's not broken to a tune of 1.3 milliion tax payers dollars????

The meeting was a farce. Not one question was answered. As an addict in Recovery who has seen what happens in Detox centres. I am very concerned that the elderly living in the same grounds will be the easiest target. The people in detox leave the centre at anytime to go home. Many becoming very angry and running out or leaving in the night... nothing the staff can do on EXIT !! First place the addict will go is the little old lady next door who definetly will have meds ! WE addicts steal from ones we love.... stealling from the elderly will take much less effort and when the addict runs from the Detox after 2 days 3, 4 or however many if were leaving we are leaving for a fix AND Quick !! The funding was pulled from Angus Campbell to be put into a facility that is to be run the same ?? Why ?? Politics ?? You think people would care more about the Safety of Residents then POWER AND CONTROL !! God Bless all of you this effects. This can be solved ... the community must get together and not give up.

My wife attended the meeting and felt the residents came simply wanting answers that were not adequately given. People were certainly sympathetic and supportive of the centre but wondered if it was best placed in a residential area. According to the spokes people, the police were called approximately 10 times last year to resolve incidents. Questions about property values were not addressed as well since the area is zoned residential how does this facility pass as residential given treatment lasts only 2 weeks? Those that have worked and volunteered at Angus Campbell attested to the fact that needles were often found on the facility. My wife was hoping to hear examples of how other communities have done similar things with no issues. She was looking for reassurance and evidence that this scenario is nothing to be concerned about. That didn't happen. Instead questions were poorly answered with political rhetoric. No one is arguing that these types of facilities are important, but the question of having this in a residential area is indeed of concern and one that has not been adequately answered. I think its the very least the neighbourhood deserves.

I take offense to what Teddi has said...it takes a heck of a smart person to realize their addiction then it takes guts to do something about it! I don't understand all this opposition to a detox being in the neighbourhood...my goodness, do you honestly think that these people are going to walk around at night and create harm? They are there to deal with their addiction...and perhaps this is the time where the rest of us should say...'there but for the Grace of God..go I.'

This is ridiclous they couldn't even answer most question they were so avasive... all they kept saying was well we don't really know that yet. They couldn't answer how many staff would be working at one time, or how many security guards would be on to help protect the community. What are they going to do when the crime rate goes up in the neighbourhood?? I would assume it is going to be the same as it was when the old providence hospital was being vandalized... NOTHING. When you called the police they were scared to come up to the area so most of the time they didn't.. I am going to assume it is going to be the same thing with the detox center. It is going to be a steady stream of addicts going to and from Snow Hut for cigarettes and back to the detox center. It is unsafe for the people in the neighbourhood and especially the children that are going to the school a block away. It would have been nice if they actually discussed some of the issues with the concerned community rather than just saying "well we don't really know that yet" and telling us "that these people are smart people they would never do anything to harm anyone or anything" Well in my oppinon they are not smart people if they were they wouldnt be addicts!
