Hoping to take control of the feral cat problem in Moose Jaw, Glady Bell announced on Tuesday a new program coming to the Friendly City — the Band City Stray Cat and Protection Society (SCRAPS).

 

Having been in the works for almost a year now, Bell said when creating a program such as SCRAPS, it can be a long process. However, it is now ready to be introduced into the community.

 

“What we will be doing is finding the locations of where the feral cats are currently living, trapping them, (testing them) and if they don’t have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukemia, then we will be spaying or neutering them, vaccinating them and tattooing them in the ear.”

 

Depending on where the cats are found, in the industrial or residential areas of the city, Bell said they will either all be re-released back to where they came from or in the case of residential areas, only a few will be re-released, while the rest are re-located.

    Terrific idea ...I hope this grows and extends to outlying areas as it seems we here in Mortlach get cats dropped off on our doorsteps, creating an endless new supply every season. Keep up the good work !

    I thoroughly disagree with you Gordon. Just because the problem may initially seem insurmountable doesn't mean you just don't even bother. That's like saying "There are so many malnourished children in Africa. But why bother helping them because many more will just keep being born and my $50 dollar donation will never change anything". Ignorant people like you are the real barrier to change.

    This program that you are trying to encourage is all well and good. But the problem will never be solved in this maner! Unfortunately these cats will reproduce faster than you can get this under control. The animal population in this City is way out of hand now!! You feel like you live in a kennel..
