22-year-old Daniel James Smith appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court today to face charges of attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Legal aide Merve Shaw asked the court for a 30 day mental health assessment under section 672 of the Canadian Criminal Code, with Judge Margaret Gordon agreeing to the request scheduled to take place in North Battleford.

At approximately 6 a.m. Moose Jaw Police and EMS attended to the intersection of Fifth Avenue Northwest at Hall Street West for a report of a vehicle/pedestrian collision. A male was transported to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital with undetermined injuries and his dog was taken to the vet also with undetermined injuries.

Smith fled the scene of the accident and was apprehended a short time later by police.

The victim has been released from hospital, with injuries to the dog being undetermined at this time.
