Costs for the signage for the revised 18-metre loading zone in front of two daycares will be borne by the applicant.

During Tuesday’s regular city council meeting, the majority of council voted in favour of an amendment brought forward by Coun. Brian Swanson regarding the signage in front of the YMCA Explore ‘n’ Learn Childcare Centre and the Southwest Daycare ‘n’ Early Learning Centre on the 500 block of Fourth Avenue Southwest. The signage request came from a report from the engineering department considered in the Aug. 8 meeting of the Transportation Services Advisory Committee.

Swanson’s amendment changed the cost to be borne from the PW-29 Transportation Upgrades Projects to the applicant.

“We have numerous requests for signage from various businesses (and) later in this report residences,” said Swanson. “It’s normal that the application for signage — the costs incurred — be borne by the applicant and I think we should remain consistent with that.”

Coun. Don Mitchell said he believed that because it was a daycare and not a commercial business, exception should be made to where the costs come from.

“I think there’s a difference in terms municipal participation against the board and a daycare operation than it would be for a commercial business requesting a loading zone,” said Mitchell. “It’s not a big deal. So I support this as a city contribution to a need as for … the safety of the children and having access to a loading area to daycares.”
