For Lynne Bowerin, it’s important to show her kids firefighters are regular people.
“It’s nice to see that they’re still people as heroes,” said Bowerin. “The kids see them as heroes and they’re also people … Thank you to the firemen for their great service and for help being part of our community.”
Bowerin came for her third time with her family and her two boys to the annual Moose Jaw Fire Department fire prevention week open house at the South Hill Fire Hall on Saturday. The open house marked the last day of fire prevention week and was an opportunity for residents to learn more about fire safety practices.
“We just try to make people aware that fire safety is a all year-round thing. It’s not just one week out of the year,” said Moose Jaw Fire Department public education officer Cathie Bassett. “We have winter coming up. There’s lots of things they have to do - get their furnaces checked, make sure that they have good outdoor ports for their vehicles to be plugged in.”
With the approaching Christmas season, she said people need to check their lighting and electrical wires for their lights.
The theme for this year is to have two ways out of each room and the house. Bassett said families need to practice their escape plan and be sure they have a meeting place outside that the kids know about.
“Because we’re in Saskatchewan, we say be gopher ready rather than be rabbit ready and have your two ways out,” said Bassett, adding that she was pleased with the family turnout on Saturday. “This is what it’s all about is our families and making sure that they’re safe.”
Firefighter Rob Halsall said people need to sit down and discuss with the family how to get out of the house safely and what to do if there is a fire, such as leaving the house to call 9-1-1.
