There were more than just ghosts and ghouls out on the street in the chilly air Wednesday night.
Almost 450 volunteers went door knocking through the streets of Moose Jaw to collect items for the seventh annual Better Together Food Drive. The drive collected items for the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and was put on by the Hillcrest Apostolic Church.
Cam Lewis, one of the food drive organizers, said approximately the same number of volunteers came out this year as last year.
“It makes the night go by a lot faster and it makes it more enjoyable for everybody because nobody has to work long into the night,” said Lewis. “Then they’re happy to come back out again because it was kind of fun and not too hard at the same time.”
Volunteers of all ages participated in collecting the brown paper bags filled with non-perishable food items. Everyone was divided into teams with different routes in the city before all of the food was collected at the Hillcrest Apostolic Church. All items will be boxed up, weighed and transported to the food bank.
“It’s just fun to help people,” said 15-year-old volunteer Aidan Sommerfeld.
Fellow volunteer Andrew Thornton said he believes the food drive is a really good cause.
“I think it’s fantastic,” said Thornton, a first-time volunteer. “I’m looking forward to seeing how much we raise. So I’m excited. I’m hoping that we exceed the total from last year.”
In 2011 the drive raised just over 55,000 pounds of food, which Lewis said was the highest total yet.
