New council takes oath of office

The new council took their oath of office Tuesday night in a ceremony at city hall in front of provincial court judge Margaret Gordon.

“An ancient and honourable tradition is the taking of an oath,” said Gordon. “The purpose of the oath is … to remind the councillors of their responsibility, to act ethically and that they hold a position of trust.”

Mayor Deb Higgins was the first to take the oath to “truly, faithfully and impartially to the best of (her) knowledge and ability perform the duties of this office.” She also promised to be “vigilant and active in causing the laws governing the City of Moose Jaw” to be obeyed and executed.

She promised that she has "not received and will not receive any payment or reward, or promise of payment or reward, for the exercise of any corrupt practice or other undue execution of this office.” She also promised to “promote the peace, order and good government of the city and the health, safety and welfare of its inhabitants" as well as to "disclose (her) pecuniary interest as required.”

The elected councillors Heather Eby, Dawn Luhning, Don Mitchell, Brian Swanson, Patrick Boyle and Candis Kirkpatrick took the oath after Higgins.

“We each bring to council different backgrounds and experiences, but what we do share is a common goal to improve the quality of life for our citizens and a desire to keep Moose Jaw moving forward,” said Higgins in her inaugural address. “We come together respecting the choices made by residents in selecting their new council, to debate and make decisions in the best interest of our city.”

    Maybe the first order of business council should do is reexamine the snowplowing within the city. It is a joke. I have lived across Canada and in Europe and by far Moose Jaw is the worse place for snow plowing. By far. Weyburn is better than Moose Jaw. While it snows and snows the trucks are in their nice warm bays waiting and waiting. This just shows the city is more interested in saving money then the safety of the residents within the community. While cars are sliding and get stuck, accidents occurring throughout the city..safety is the last thing on the mind of council and the city administration. Shame shame shame...come on into the future and think of the citizens of community and provide some up date and improved services...because you are lacking in that department. Shame or Sham!
