The Regional Intersectoral Committee (RIC) is looking at ways to promote healthy living.
The healthy active living committee, a subgroup of the RIC, held a healthy active living forum in June to identify ways to build a supportive environment for physical activity in the south central RIC.
Committee chair and local YMCA CEO Jeff Fox and RIC co-ordinator Christine Boyczuk presented three priorities to accomplish that goal to executive committee during Monday’s meeting. Executive voted in favour of Coun. Don Mitchell’s motion to refer the information to the parks and recreation advisory committee.
The healthy active living committee's proposals included implementing a new city position in the parks and recreation department to facilitate action to develop a plan.
“The number one priority is trail development and even a step further is active transportation,” said Fox. “We need to develop a long-term plan … The ultimate plan would be to connect the trails so people could get downtown (from) wherever in the city.”
