The Kinsmen Sportsplex main pool and waterslide are closed until further notice.

“We’re in the process of changing out the sand in our filters in the main pool,” said Jody Hauta, director of parks and recreation with the city. “We want to maintain a high standard for health and safety for our users and that’s obviously the main reason why we’re under the closure right now.”

The leisure pool, hot tub and steam room are unaffected by the closure of the main pool and waterslide. He said the problem began as a water clarity issue.

“We had some issue with water clarity before Christmas and then after Christmas, the water clarity declined,” said Hauta. “We had done some troubleshooting I guess and thought it was a water-chemistry issue initially, meaning that we just needed to get our chemicals in balance in the water. But then upon further troubleshooting it appears that the sand and the filtration system needed to be changed out.”

He said the city is in the process of changing out the sand in the filters in the main pool. Staff has been working with the provincial public health department to troubleshoot and correct the issue.
