A snow plow works away on 11th Avenue Northwest before turning around to continue plowing Caribou Street West this week.
Snow clearance and plowing streets were priorities for the city over the weekend following the recent snowstorm.
“The main focus for this weekend (was) … to make sure that all blocked areas within the city (were) opened up,” said public works manager Duane Grado. “(By Sunday) it looked like we have all the blocked in areas all opened up … Sometimes we (used) loaders, graders whatever we (had) to open it up because in some places the snow (was) as high as three feet.”
He said the city received approximately 23 centimetres of snow, which launched the emergency snow operations plan. The city mobilized into two 12-hour shifts of clearing roads and planned to launch into the 24-hour snow clearing operations beginning Sunday at 10 p.m. Grado said the midnight shift is likely to continue until Thursday.
He said on Sunday crews progressed through Priority 1 streets, which are main roadways. He said sometime on Monday, crews would likely complete Priority 1 streets. On Sunday, the city also worked to open up lanes to provide for garbage collecting to begin again on Monday.
“We’ll finish up the Priority 1 plow, go into the bus routes and then finish up the Priority 2 plows,” said Grado. “By Thursday morning the city’s going to look pretty good and we’ll be in Priority 2. I predict we’ll be halfway through those.”
