Lil Chicago Derby League announced their new home will be at Mosaic Place starting
in the spring.

The Lil Chicago Derby League (LCRD) announced Monday — from its new home — it will be bringing derby action to the city's downtown.

LCRD announced, starting this spring, Mosaic Place will be team headquarters for practices, upcoming home bouts and special events.

“We’ve been working on this announcement for some time and we’re very pleased to be the new home of (roller) derby in Moose Jaw," director of business development for Mosaic Place, Doug Campbell said. “Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre at Mosaic Place will be the new home for Lil Chicago.”

Prior to the new contract with Mosaic Place, the LCRD held its bouts at the Hillcrest Sports Centre.

“Because of gymnastics expanding, we were bumped over to the smaller side,” team member Karla Pratt said of the need for a new location.

“We’ve been waiting to be in here for a few years now,” team captain, Mandy Eirich said about the team’s new home.

“It will definitely bring out more fans," team member Amber McCrystal said about the move to Mosaic Place. “(It's) a different and better facility that works better for fans to come watch and offers us more space. So we think it’s a great opportunity to re-introduce derby to the community and introduce even more (people) to the sport.”

“People are just excited to be in this new building because it is so nice,” team member Lyndsey Hender said. “I think we’re going to have a great turnout for our first game, which will be May 11. We’re hoping to get around 900 people.”

The league also announced the new addition of Ron Gall as coach for the LCRD, and a launch of a junior roller derby league this spring.

“We’re excited for all the big plans we’re hosting this year. We have a boot camp and central regionals at the end of the season," Hender told the Times-Herald. “We also have the junior derby team starting up.”

LCRD said junior derby will be for youth aged 8 to 18, and will have to have parental consent to participate.

“No experience is required, so come out and we’ll teach you how to play ... all you need is some equipment."
