The annual Thunder Creek Model Train Show is returning to Moose Jaw’s Western Development Museum (WDM) March 23 and 24.

“This is an event that has been going on for a number of years now, in partnership between the WDM and the Thunder Creek Model Railroad Club,” said Kathy Fitton, manager of the Moose Jaw WDM. “They invite model railroaders from across Saskatchewan and there are people who come from Alberta and British Columbia, and they bring their own model train layouts.”

“We get people from Calgary, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina ... We have quite a good turnout, and quite a broad range of models and displays,” added Bud Guidos, a representative of the Thunder Creek Model Railroad Club (TCMRC). “We even have some lego (displays).”

The WDM first partnered with the TCMRC in the construction of a model train gazebo for the museum’s railway section.

“We had worked with them to put up a gazebo and they helped us. We put it up to add another display to their train section,” said Guidos. “While we were there, they allowed us to have space to do some work. They’ve been very generous and we’re very happy with them.”

The creation of a show was a logical next step.

“We had been holding our train show in different places, and then we had the opportunity to do it (at the WDM), so we worked with them and they said we could,” Guidos said. “So we incorporated our train show right into the museum.”

The show, which Fitton said has been ongoing for almost 15 years, has been “a really successful show both for the train club and the WDM. It’s been a really good partnership.”
