“Women supporting women, that’s what nights like this are all about,” were the words of Mayor Deb Higgins as she addressed the International Women’s Society of Moose Jaw, Thursday night.

In honour of International Women’s Day, the society held it’s annual International Women’s Day Potluck dinner at St. Andrews Church.

Usha Sharma, who has been a member of the group since 1983, said Thursday’s event is just the society’s way of honouring it’s members, bringing women together to celebrate one another and giving support where support is needed.

“We are all women and we can help make each other stronger. Take away race, culture and religion and we all face the same challenges. I always say, we are all human first.”

Meeting once a month, the International Women’s Society is more than a group of women who meet once a year in honour of one day, they are a group of women who have formed friendships, a support group and a community, said Nezmia Bengali, the society’s president.

“I think this group is important to the community because it gives women a group of people they can relate to.

“What’s nice about our group is that we have many women from many backgrounds who can share information and knowledge.”
