Expansion of irrigation would bring huge economic benefits to Moose Jaw, a leading engineer has said.
AECOM’s Dale Miller, manager for water resources, Western Canada, spoke to the Times Herald during the Irrigation Crop Diversification Corporation (ICDC) and Saskatchewan Irrigation Projects Association (SIPA) annual conference at Moose Jaw's Heritage Inn on Monday.
He updated people at the conference on irrigation expansion on land surrounding Lake Diefenbaker as well as the Qu'Appelle South Irrigation Project, from Bridgeford to Marquis north of Moose Jaw.
Miller told the Times Herald there were two implications for Moose Jaw.
“If you put 100,000 acres of irrigation only one hour from Moose Jaw, the economic benefit will be tremendous,” he said.
Miller said irrigation provided a secure water supply and allowed producers to grow more valuable products such as potatoes and sugar beet.
