The Moose Jaw YMCA has awarded its first peace medal to honour the work and contribution of Dicky Scholten.
The medal, which is intended to recognize the achievements of those who contribute towards creating a safer community, locally or globally, was awarded at the YMCA Strong Start Family Centre on Monday.
The event was part of peace week — an international celebration which runs until Saturday.
Scholten, 68, of Moose Jaw, said it was “overwhelming” to be given the award.
“I never really thought I would receive a medal for what I have been doing,” she said.
Scholten started the Moose Jaw Chapter of Amnesty in 1978 after moving to the city. She first became a member of Amnesty International in 1960 while in her native Holland.
She is also involved in Moose Jaw’s Heart of the City piano program where she volunteers to give lessons to underprivileged youngsters.
Scholten is a member of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians and is an active member of the Moose Jaw Peace Coalition.
