The Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraiser is going well - but more families have signed up for hampers this year.

“I think some of the larger employers have had people laid off,” Maj. Don Law, head of the Salvation Army in Moose Jaw, said, “People are in between jobs looking for a new one so they might be a one income family for Christmas so it is tough for a lot of families.

“More families seem to be coming for a hamper than in other years.”

Interviews with potential recipient families will continue every day from 9 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. until Friday at the Salvation Army.

Law said there was also a lot of interest in the adopt-a-family program.

“We will start matching up families on Friday,” he said, “People should come in this week as soon as possible to adopt a family. If they come in the next few days, we would appreciate that.”

I agree! what happened to the spirit of giving during this time of year! there are people who need it and yes some are the ones who drink and do drugs! the ones i feel for are the kids that have to live with parents who do so and that is where the salvation army comes in! they help alot of children out there who have to live with parents who have addictions. I always think about kids not the ones who make them suffer, because they are the ones that are more important.

I just love donating and helping people out at this time of year. But what i have learned over the years about SOME of the people that recieve these hampers make me want to keep my donations. I 100% know of some that are on social assistance and take the help from these kind of organizations then are seen spending thier $$$$ on marijuana or in the local bars. They brag to me about how much stuff they recieved as they are guzzling back on a beer. Where is the pride?? Its to bad that these few are going to end up wrecking it for the ones that dearly need it and appreciate it.

I'd rather give my donation to the moosejawforum they are the people that really need help the most in our community.

    THE POINT
    - December 9, 2009 at 14:17:18

I think the entire point of the comment was missed here. Maybe I am wrong to suggest this, but isn't it like the Multi-Plex now actively competing against charities that do a lot of good in this community for funds? Maybe that should be the real tagline out there that people are getting back teh same kind of tax receipt from the city for the Multi-Plex as the Salvation Army and other groups would issue? For me I would rather give to the Sally Ann over top of the Multi-Plex any day of the week. As far as saying that people are having a hard time this time of the year goes that is just one religious group's impression.

I think ""NEW IDEA"you should be ashamed of yourself for bringing the multiplex insult to the salvation armies door step,They are a wonderful agency that provides a very much needed service to the community.I think that you should say sorry and donate,This time of year is hard on many families,And the last thing the salvation army needs is those types of comments,What they need is help.Try giving help and not shame to the season. That a NEW IDEA im sure for you!!!!!!!!!!.
