Property taxes in Moose Jaw would have to go up if the Government of Saskatchewan does not keep its promise to grant municipalities a full point of provincial sales tax, says Mayor Glenn Hagel.

The funding formula for municipalities was changed for 2009. Municipalities were given a share per capita of 0.9 per cent of PST and promised one per cent for 2010.

But according to media reports, Saskatchewan Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer  said he may not be able to boost municipal operating grants as much as he promised.

Hagel said he was still hopeful the initial promise would be kept. He said the new funding formula was very important as it allowed municipalities to put financial plans in place.

“It gives us the ability to plan ahead,” he said, “Traditionally money coming from the province to help cities operate is made on a year by year basis which means we are usually three months into the fiscal year before we find out what kind of provincial money we are going to receive.”

I'm with J.J on that one. The ruts and snow buildup are nowhere near as bad as last year so far. Seems like the City crews took notice of what happened last year, and are on the ball this year. Granted, not all roads are cleared off, but it's only been a week since we got the first real snowfall. Give it a couple months before we start complaining. At least let them have a reasonable amount of time to try and deal with it.

The street has been graded right down to the pavement in my area and it has been sanded every direction but up; the city certainly is doing something about snow removal. Are you perhaps not out of bed yet when the sanding trucks are out, 6:30-7am?

Well it was just a couple of weeks ago that Hagel said he wasn't concerned about the Goverments numbers now he says they should keep their promises on fundings. Well Glenn what did you expect would happen, your comment on the Governments numbers didn't seem to be an issue last week but suddenly they are! Remember your in municipal Gov't now, that's what happens, besides given the fact the City is doing nothing in terms of the Icy streets and snow removal the money your saving will help to make up any shortfalls in City funding..at a cost to motorists I might add.

Bringing out the excuses early to soften people up for the inevitable tax increases to pay for fiscal irresponsibility, aka the MULTIPLEX.

Projected potash sales gave the prov govt the "ability to plan ahead". Obviously those plans fell through. Hagel says the projected 1% of prov sales tax for 2010 "gives them the ability to plan ahead". Same story; just different players. The prov govt depended on the Chinese to buy potash-they didn't; the city of MJ is depending on the prov govt to pay municipalities 1% of the tax - looks like they might not. Darn those "not buying potash" people. Let's put the blame where it belongs.
