At the Town ‘N’ Country Mall in Moose Jaw Saturday, there were three volunteers for the Asperger/Autism Support Group who set up a table, and greeted shoppers as they got a head start on their holiday gift buying.

The volunteers, including member Wanda Wilder, were selling scarves with a colourful jigsaw puzzle patterns. According to Wilder, the pattern on the scarves represented the lives of those with autism.

“Their whole life is a puzzle, and that’s what we’re trying to get that out to people,” said Wilder.

Wilder, and other members that volunteer their time for the support group, are inspired by their own children that suffer from either autism

“We have children that have asperger’s or autism and it’s just been a fight from hell all their lives,” said member Wanda Wilder. “So we’re just trying to get the awareness out there so other people are understanding.”

I am so glad to see your article on aspergers/autism. One of the ladies in the picture is my sister. She and the others in her group have worked very hard to make people aware of aspergers/autism. Thank you for your article. It's these articles that puts out the information and awareness and helps people understand this condition and may reach out to those who are seeking help for someone with aspergers/autism. Thank you again!!!

Mae, when you mention the need for government to be involved, Saskatchewan is the only province that does not have a comprehensive treatment plan for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Aspergers is an Autism Spectrum Disorder). When the province doesn't have a treatment plan in place it is understandable why current educational and medical services are not meeting the needs of these children. With early diagnosis and appropriate educational interventions children with Aspergers Syndrome can become successful in their endeavours. Saskatchewan claims to be one of the "HAVE" provinces, but it is still a "HAVE NOT" province for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Educators in particular need to become more knowledgeable, better trained, and FAR better educated about this disorder in order for students with an autism spectrum disorder to reach their potential.
