Moose Jaw Police Service’s newest recruits Banan and Andy are undergoing a tough training schedule with the aim of walking the city’s streets in February.

But it’s perhaps harder for their handlers Const. Chad Scheske and Const. Jay Sills, who are learning how to get the dogs to do what they want and fight crime.

The dogs and their handlers started training back in September and spend five days a week learning everything from tracking and searching for missing people to obedience, agility and narcotics detection.

But Scheske said it doesn’t stop there as the dogs live with the handlers and are now part of the family.

“Our day starts before training,” he said, “We walk the dog, feed them, take them to the washroom, play fetch. The dog is with us pretty much 24/7.”

Sills said his family had bonded well with Andy.
