Thirty-five workers at Moose Jaw General Cable have been issued with permanent layoff notices.

The plant will now permanently close. In November, temporary layoff notices were issued to workers for three months and it was hoped the plant would reopen in the spring.

But on Thursday, Lisa Lawson, vice-president of Corporate Communications, based at Highland Heights, Kentucky, confirmed the Moose Jaw centre would not be reopening.

Lawson said it was due to a downturn, which the company had hoped to turn around.

“Today we advised our associates in Moose Jaw we are permanently closing the facilities,” she said.

“As we told them, it has nothing to do with the performance of those associates. They are an outstanding workforce.

“It’s nothing to do with operation performance,” she said, “It was strictly an economic decision.”

I wish the folks who worked there the best of luck moving on from this shut down, this is a terrible time of year to be getting news like this. I wish that people would take the time to realise that there are actually people affected by these closures, layoffs, and lock outs, and think about it a bit before they start flapping their gums about politicians and saying how crappy Moose Jaw is, I really think it's disgusting.

Looks like your Mplex is pushing businesses out of your city not attracting them. When I say businesses, I mean real businesses, not those so called home based ones set up to write off the lease payments on them new SUVs.

Most of the companies closing (XL, General Cable) have strong ties to the states. This whole mess was caused by deregulation by the Bush government and the greed of US banks. They screwed up the economy, not Hagel, Obama, Harper, etc.... that being said, go Multiplex!!

Hey Jeff and Stevo..perhaps it's possible the both of you are a little wet behind the ears. I can't beleive how much you world travelers seem to know it's just amazing. There is no doubt people are cynical about this City and the Local politicians and for good reason I might add but it's people like you guys who spout off and yet have no clue what you are talking about. It's also people like you who elect these dopes. I found it pitful that you guys would put Hagel in the same breath as two National leaders like Harper and Obama, come on you can't be serious because if you are you suffer from some kind of serious dillusion.
