Literacy can be fun and unconventional — that was the message organizers tried to convey during the Family Literacy Day celebrations at the Moose Jaw Public Library on Sunday.
“If you’re reading the words in a song, you’re reading,” Moose Jaw Literacy Network literacy co-ordinator Sharon Bourdeau told the Times-Herald about the theme of this year’s literacy event, “Sing for Literacy.”
She said literacy is much more than just reading books, as there are a multitude of other ways people use words in daily activities (such as singing) and the point of encouraging literacy is to encourage a love of learning by any means — through books or other sources.
The Literacy Network organized a family carnival at the library, in partnership with the Library Youth Committee.
Jen Angus, Youth Committee co-ordinator, said activities at this year’s event included free soft drinks, popcorn and cotton candy, crafts, a reading centre, carnival games with prizes and music.
