Thatcher Drive East has many things — box stores, portable billboards and access to the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds. And a city administration recommended project would see more of something else added to that area — green space beautification.

During Monday’s budget committee meeting, parks and recreation director Jody Hauta introduced possible street trees and traffic medians on Thatcher Drive East as one of the parks dedication reserve projects recommended for 2010.

Hauta said the city hired a landscape architect to help establish a plan as to how best spruce up Thatcher Drive.

According to a capital budget report, although there has been minimal park development at the city’s entrance, as well as a trail on the north side of the road and smaller trees planted, the city has an recommended enhancement plan that includes planting trees along the roadway from Tourism Moose Jaw to Main Street, as well as upgrading existing traffic medians to make them more appealing.

The Thatcher Drive project is just one of seven recommended green space development projects for 2010, which will cost a total of $1 million together.

Maybe some of the newfound wealth could be used to finish off the Thatcher Drive roadway to where it connects to the #1 highway. That in itself would make it look like someone actually had a plan, and solve the bottleneck problem that exists by the tourism information facility.

Maybe they'll have the work done in time for the Central Collegiate Reunion which is being held at the Ex from July 8th to 11th.

Great idea! The area is a mess and disgraceful. All those signs lined up, particularly on the south side of the street, need to be removed. There are too many of them to read anyway. I cannot tell you what one sign advertises and go by there several times a day. They are ugly and tacky. There at least needs to be some guidelines and goverance over them.

Nice to see, while they are at it could they do something to slow down the speeders on 9th Ave. SW on the way to the Base? It is getting out of control out this way, the cars speeding are bad enough, but now the semis are whipping by at over a hundred k in the 70 k zone. There was a semi last week so overloaded and going so fast that it shook our house hard enough to crack one of the front windows. Also they are using their engine retarder brakes in the city limits constantly out this way, such a treat when a person is trying to get to sleep. So for the people who use this road, please use a little consideration for those that live out this way.
