Who will be in charge of operations at the multiplex facilities?

During Monday’s executive committee meeting, councillors and the mayor discussed governing options for multiplex operations once the project is completed.

Administration recommended a separate option for each of the multiplex facilities currently under construction. For the soccer facility (to be complete by the summer), administration suggests the city negotiate an agreement with Moose Jaw YMCA to management and operation services.

For the downtown portion of the multiplex, administration recommends the city issue a request for proposals for a curling facility operator-manager.

Jody Hauta, parks and recreation director, told the executive committee administration had contacted several municipalities who either operate multi-use recreational facilities themselves, contract that job out to a private company or have a local non-profit organization do the work.

He said all three options have pros and cons and any municipalities interviewed seem to speak favourably of either of the options.

With the exception of Bob at the Civic Center, the employees at the city rinks do a horrible job. The ice at the Civic Center is terrible (notice they always have to stuff snow between the boards and the ice on the South end of the Civic Center... rumour has it that the ice was incorrectly installed this summer, and that it is too expensive and disruptive to take it out and do it right) I have heard more than one city employee at city rinks say they "don't get paid enough" to sweep the floors, clean the benches and clean the glass etc. It has nothing to do with Union or Non-Union. It has to do with management. The managers need to ensure the employees are getting the job done. The City can't run the city. Hire a management company. Bid on some events (do you expect Jody Hauta to do that too?) Have it run properly. DO IT RIGHT. IT IS TO BIG OF A VENTURE TO GIVE IT A HALF HEARTED EFFORT.

True Bob is a good Civic Centre and City Employee. Bob is not the only one that works at the Civic Centre there is also Kevin,Tracey and Kevin. The Civic Centre has four Maintenance Staff that Take pride in the work that they do with the tools and equipment that is provided to do the job to provide a clean and good Ice surface to skate on.

In agreement with what wait a minute, city employees deserve first crack at operating this venue, no matter how disgusting the politics was that got us here. Show a little loyalty to your employees McKay and do the right thing for once. City owned facility should employ city employees. These people do a good job, and are not paid as well as observer and some others would have us believe. By the way, where is the agreement between the warriors and the city for use of this facility. Haven't heard anything about that yet in the monthly reports from administration. Stay tuned folks the surprises will add as time goes on.

You got the taxpayers stuck with paying for this exuberant white elephant, might as well stick them with having to pay high union wages, benefits, pensions and forever being held hostage to union contracts.

So we're paying for this and now we more or less give it away? And if private runs this we still pay the up keep and fixes.Sounds like a great deal for a private company or a local non-profit organization, but WE THE TAX PAYERS get nothing but the bill.STOP THIS AND GET OUR CITY WORKERS DOING IT,THEN WE HAVE PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE TAX PAYERS AND WHO TAKE PRIDE IN WORK!
