“There’s an art to roping.”
That’s what Mortlach’s Glen Fafard told the Times-Herald during the ranch roping competition at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Ground’s Golden Mile Arena on Saturday. He was among one of several teams competing at the one-day event, tossing lassos and bringing the bovines to the ground calmly and efficiently.
“It’s a lot like throwing a baseball,” Fafard said about the mechanics of roping a calf. “It’s muscle memory and you pick your target.”
Unlike calf-roping competitions based on speed, Fafard said Saturday’s event was an opportunity for local ranching enthusiasts to demonstrate the technique of proper roping. Although there were points issued for efficiency, speed was not of primarily concern for judges at the event.
