Confidence is key when trying out for the MJ-Star Search competition, which is something judges suggested Moose Jaw’s Randy Blake work on following his audition at Timothy Eaton Gardens on Saturday.
However, the judges were still impressed with the courage it took Blake to sing before an audience.
“You don’t have to tell me how hard it is to get up there and do it. Andy you did it,” judge Bill Stewart told Blake, adding the performer should also work on his phrasing and pitch.
Head judge Dale Bush said clarity comes from confidence and, although Blake picked an excellent song to sing (“Kiss an Angel Good Morning” by Charley Pride), Blake wasn’t quite as familiar with the lyrics as one needs to be to have true confidence in a song.
“You were a bit tied to that (karaoke) screen.”
Founder and chairwoman of MJ-Star Search, Sharon Thorvaldson, said Saturday’s auditions was one of several that will be held at Timothy Eatons Garden in the weeks ahead. The music is courtesy of Hooked on Karaoke.
The next auditions are on April 3, followed by sessions on May 1, May 4, June 1 and June 5. Those the judges select from each auditions will compete in the semi-final competition on June 19 and June 26. From there, competitors can advance to the finals on July 3.
