Council has voted unanimously to give city engineers the authority to remove logs from the Canadian Pacific Railway dam to minimize the upstream impact on Moose Jaw.
The city has been told the Moose Jaw River Basin has a higher than usual snow pack, which could have a serious impact on the city.
Mayor Glenn Hagel compared it to the 1997 floods.
Back in October, it was decided the logs would remain in place throughout the winter, thus maintaining water levels in both Plaxton’s Lake and the Moose Jaw River, located in Wakamow Valley.
But at Monday’s City Council meeting, members received information from the engineering department that the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has advised them that there is a lot of snowpack in the Moose Jaw River Basin.
Information to council said the runoff potential is well above average.
“Because of the unpredictability of the spring thaw Saskatchewan Watershed recommends we remove the logs from the CPR dam to minimize the upstream impacts,” the information from Ryan Johnson, City Engineer, stated.
