REGINA - A Saskatchewan man with five impaired driving convictions has pleaded guilty to trying to carjack the vehicle belonging to Thunder Creek MLA Lyle Stewart.
Clayton Friday, 45, admitted in provincial court Tuesday that he tried to steal the Saskatchewan Party MLA's car last October.
Stewart had stopped on his way to work to help a driver in distress, but instead the man ordered him out of his car.
The veteran politician wasn't having any of it and a scuffle ensued in which Stewart was stabbed several times with pens and hit on the head with the rear-view mirror.
Stewart managed to phone 9-1-1 and had the man pinned beneath the dash when police arrived.
Friday, who is to be sentenced April 7, also pleaded guilty to several other charges including impaired driving, robbery and failing to stop for police in an earlier incident.
Friday’s criminal record also includes five previous impaired driving convictions, one previous conviction for dangerous driving and one conviction for driving while disqualified.
