There were only minor injuries resulting from a single-vehicle collision involving a van transporting school students to a festival in Regina.
At 8 a.m. on Hwy 2 (21 kilometres north of Mossbank), Gravelbourg and Moose Jaw RCMP, as well as EMS and firefighters responded to the crash that involved a 15-passenger van (carrying 12 people) pulling a utility trailer northbound to Winnipeg when it hit the east ditch and struck the embankment.
Sgt. Carole Raymond, Saskatchewan RCMP media relations officer, told the Times-Herald at least two of the van occupant were adults on the school trip.
According to Canadian Press, the students were from College Mathieu in Gravelbourg and were heading to Winnipeg as part of the French Catholic school’s theatre club.
However, she did say there very icy road conditions are believed at the time of the crash, which resulted in the vehicle and trailer being totally “written off.” /the trailer apparently swung around and struck the van in the collision.
Those vehicle occupants were transported to Moose Jaw and Gravelbourg hospitals for assessment.
Raymond said charges are pending investigation. She added a driver can be charged if police determine he or she is driving too fast for road conditions.
Wednesday’s snowy and slippery conditions are believed to have caused more than one vehicular incident. According to Raymond, RCMP received six reports of collisions throughout Saskatchewan just between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday, two of which were attributed to slick road conditions.
“So they were busy,” she said about police dealing with the impact of Wednesday’s weather, adding RCMP recommend drivers adjust driving to match road conditions.
One of the adult chaperone’s hurt his arm.
