On Monday, the City of Moose Jaw began fire hydrant flushing in the downtown area and will continue to flush downtown hydrants until Friday morning.
After that time, crews will move in a westerly direction towards Ninth Avenue Northwest, flushing hydrants in the Grayson Industrial Park area.
Public works manager Duane Grado said, in a press release, the annual hydrant-flushing program is beneficial for multiple reasons.
“It removes any sedimentation from the water mains, improves water quality and has the potential to reduce our water distribution pumping costs.”
While crews are flushing in a particular area, the city requests residents refrain from using water (which may have a brown or rusty appearance during flushing). Discoloured water should return to normal in about five hours, although the city suggests residents might want to store water ahead of time.
According to the city press release, water mains corrode over time and flushing helps reduce mineral deposits, improving water quality and increasing pipe capacity.
