The City of Moose Jaw is actively enforcing bylaws requiring garbage loads to the landfill be secured and tarped.
From May 31 to June 13, Moose Jaw Police Service, as well as landfill personnel will enforce the bylaw more rigidly, giving out citations to those contravening the rules.
“Untarped trucks or trailers travelling to the landfill are prone to lose their cargo, scattering debris on the roadway,” city public works manager Duane Grado said in a city hall release. He added scattered trash presents a safety concern as well as leaving streets littered.
“We would prefer to raise people’s awareness of the problem rather than give them a ticket.”
Approximately 200 vehicles enter the landfill, dumping 160 tonnes of material, on a daily basis.
