Two RCMP vehicles in Saskatchewan have been equipped with a new piece of equipment to track down illegal motorists.
While the Automated Licence Recognition Program (ALRP) has been installed in vehicles in Yorkton and North Battleford, Moose Jaw RCMP can request to borrow one.
Moose Jaw Police Service has had the equipment in one of its vehicles since April.
The ALPR equipment checks for unregistered or expired plates, stolen vehicles and if the owner is suspended or wanted for another matter.
It scans licence plates as the officer drives so they can check a large number of vehicles without having to type the numbers in themselves.
The estimation is it allows the officer to check the same amount of vehicles in one hour as would normally require 900 hours.
Cpl. Jeff Soroka, RCMP F division traffic services special projects coordinator, said the RCMP teamed up with SGI for the equipment.
