The toughest of Moose Jaw’s running community could be found in Wakamow Valley on Sunday morning.
“We have the real runners,” Moose Jaw YMCA Run for Strong Kids organizing committee member Gerry Mitchell told the Times-Herald, shortly after runners ran off through local trails as part of the annual fundraising race, despite cold and rainy conditions that befell the Friendly City.
Jeff Fox, local YMCA CEO, said about 45 runners showed up for the race, which normally attracts a much larger crowd. Despite the lower turnout, which he blames entirely on the weather, Fox said the event was successful in raising money to help enable low-income families to use YMCA services.
“All of the fundraising efforts are important to help families and kids participate in the YMCA,” he said, adding Sunday’s race itself is a good exercise for the YMCA, because it supports community volunteerism, as well as a physically-healthy activity — both parts of the YMCA mandate.
