Students in Moose Jaw will become peace makers in their school, community and the world — thanks to a project run by the Red Cross and a financial boost from the federal government.
The Peace by Piece Red Cross Classroom is a project for students in grades three, four, five and six to explore global humanitarian issues and understand how their actions could contribute to a wider culture of peace.
The project was launched at Sacred Heart School on Tuesday.
MP Ray Boughen announced $37,500 in funding on behalf of James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, for the Red Cross Regina office to carry out their program across Saskatchewan.
Boughen said human rights can be a difficult concept for children to grasp and said he is pleased schools will be looking at elements of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and children’s rights.
“I think this is a really good project. It allows young people a chance to really be involved with each other.
“The whole concept is you do not have to be kicking and punching to make things happen but work together and appreciate the differences between yourself and others.”
