Cold, windy, and lacking sunshine, Saturday was not an ideal afternoon for an outdoor event.
Yet the Shifters Car Club went ahead with its annual show ‘n’ shine and actually drew a much larger crowd than last year. In fact, the weather this year was an improvement, as it rained in 2010.
The 13 year old club held its annual show at the Western Development Museum, with 25 entries — from a 1949 Studebaker and 1952 Willys Wagon to vintage snowmobiles and a modern ‘funny car’ — on display.
Another one of the entries was a 1940 Buick Special 8, a car that Clinton Hesje picked up at a classic car auction one month ago.
“It was just the right price; it went for a third of what it is worth. How often can you buy a 71 year old car with a 10 year old drive train and only 10,000 miles?” he explained.
The car has been modernized with power doors and windows and fold down seats, and made it all the way from Calgary on Thursday, with the only casualty being the car’s starter. Hesje, who went to SIAST in Moose Jaw, drove the car all the way from the Alberta city to participate in the show and run a charity golf tournament at the Lynbrook.
“It’s nice to look at and rides nice. You just stop at a lot of gas stations.”
The show was free to attendees and participants, who also received free admission to the Western Development Museum. The club also held a barbeque, with half of the profits from it going to the museum’s efforts to get its short line railroad back running.
